Shan Shui Social Debuts in Victoria, Bringing Regional Chinese Cuisine and Craft Cocktails to a Glittering Shanghai Twenties Space

Following phenomenal public demand Shan Shui has opened a brand-new Central London flagship.

Chinese eatery Shan Shui Social will be the acclaimed ‘Chew On This’ Group’s first Central London location for the Shan Shui brand, following runaway success across two UK outposts. This third venture is the brand’s most ambitious property; a two-story 74-cover restaurant on London’s evolving Buckingham Palace Road, reimagined as a sultry 1920’s Shanghai townhouse. Expect elegant art deco aesthetics, a speakeasy-style basement, and cuisine that represents the diverse landscape of China. Ellen Chew, Founder and Director of ‘Chew On This’ said, “This project is about realising a passion that I’ve always had for bringing the eclectic and authentic tastes of China’s regions to our guests. Shan Shui Social will also offer a curated list of cocktails to follow an unforgettable dining experience that celebrates both heritage and creativity.”

FOOD AND DRINK

From the fiery and numbing spices of Sichuan to the complex but delicate flavours of Guangdong, Shan Shui Social’s menu will take diners on a journey through the rich tapestry of regional Chinese dishes, prepared with time-honoured techniques and the finest ingredients. Chef Jason Li, a good friend of the Chew On This Group, has collaborated on select dishes.

With quality at front of mind, the restaurant will be open all day and the menu will showcase an array of freshly prepared dim sum and small plates, as well as moreish roast meats, wok-fried dishes and an assortment of rice and noodle options.

Sample items include:

Sichuan Mala Wontons

Chef Jason Li’s Shanghainese Kaofu
A sweet and savoury dish comprising soy braised wheat gluten cubes, wood ear fungus and mushrooms served on a bed of pak choy

Pan-Fried Chilean Sea Bass

Complementing the culinary journey is Shan Shui Social’s cocktail menu, featuring inventive drinks that fuse traditional Chinese elements – like lychee, calamansi, and yuzu – with modern mixology. Signature cocktails such as Silk Road Lychee Manhattan and Jade Spiced Mule are crafted to pair perfectly with the bold flavours of the cuisine.

THE SPACE

Situated on Buckingham Palace Road in London Victoria, the site will spread across two floors. The space is cloaked in old-world ambience, with textures and patterns inspired by Shanghai’s Roaring Twenties. The main feature of the interior design is a neon-lit bar that sits on the ground floor, with eye-catching mirrors and pops of metallic finishes surrounding it. Subtle 1920’s art deco elements and colourways of blush, mustard and wood can be found throughout the casual and intimate space.
