Air Quality

Our air quality programme comprises three ‘monitors’ that track levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide, two of the most harmful pollutants in city environments. They provide live data through the Breathe London Communities platform.

The monitors are in Parliament Square, and on Northumberland Avenue, and Bridge Street. They were installed through a collaboration between London Heritage Quarter (LHQ), Imperial College London’s Environmental Research Group, and Westminster City Council. The installations took place in June 2025, and we were delighted to be joined by Councillor Ryan Jude, Westminster City Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate, Ecology and Culture at the Northumberland Avenue installation.

The monitoring programme speaks directly to our Sustainability Action Plan, developed with the purpose-led sustainability consultancy Bioregional, which calls for greater public engagement with local air quality data, and is part of a commitment to create healthier public spaces and support behaviour change that reduces emissions. The findings will help shape future projects across the Quarter – from street redesign proposals to smarter freight and delivery systems – that reduce congestion and support cleaner air.

This work also supports Westminster City Council’s Air Quality Action Plan 2025–2040, contributing to a broader strategy for tackling pollution and protecting public health across central London.
