Once again, the City of Oslo will be sending us a magnificent spruce tree in gratitude for Britain’s support for Norway during the Second World War. This national symbol of thanksgiving and rejoicing will stand in Trafalgar Square until January.
Signaling the countdown to Christmas in London, the historic tradition of lighting the 25-metre-high tree has happened annually since 1947.
The date for the official Trafalgar Tree lights switch on is yet to be confirmed, however the tree will return to Trafalgar Square on 3 December 2026. The Christmas light switch-on will be hosted by Westminster City Council, likely including Christmas carols and ceremonial celebrations.
Regular Carol Singing on Trafalgar Square will take place at the base of the Christmas Tree throughout December too.
