Baker’s Keeper of Knowledge

Victoria Embankment Gardens

Sponsored by IET London: Savoy Place

Inspired by the pioneering public health work of Sara Josephine Baker, the sculpture explores themes of curiosity, discovery, and protection. Flowing botanical forms, scientific symbols, and layered patterns derived from microscopic imagery reflect Baker’s innovative approach to preventative medicine. Elements developed from her portrait photograph are woven throughout the design, creating a lion that feels intelligent, dynamic, and alive with movement. The piece also recognises the often-overlooked contributions of LGBTQ+ women within science and public health.
